about

Composing the music score for THE DEAD was a great experience. I was amazed at seeing the images of beautiful rural landscapes (shot on 35mm film) and moved by the realism of how the characters portray their lives affected by the zombie outbreak. The film was primarily shot in the exotic hinterlands of Ghana and Burkina Faso in West Africa. These unique cultural and visual perspectives created an excited and unfamiliar context for a zombie themed story.

Directors, Howard & Jon Ford wanted the movie to be original in every way possible including the score. They were very keen to convey the fragile sense of hope the main characters possess. The feeling of fear and loneliness amidst the unknown African wilderness led to exploring a more spiritual and earthy texture to the music score. From time to time there are melodic oases that the main characters experience along their journey. Whilst short-lived, these moments glimpse into their unspoken feelings.

The director, Howard Ford, said in one of his interviews:

"...We wanted THE DEAD to be a journey for viewers, and rural Africa is perfect for that. We wanted to make a beautiful horror movie..."

I hope the music will take the listener on a similar journey that is one of beauty and horror.
